Heinz Edelmann

Retro Illustrator

1934–2009

The german illustrator Heinz Edelmann did a lot of fantastic illustrations and designs. Together with Willy Fleckhaus he had a great impact in the design of the 60th youth magazine twen. He probably most famous artwork was the design and illustration for the beatles film »Yellow Submarine«. Since the 70th he also worked as a teacher and Professor in different Universities (Düsseldorf, Stuttgart etc.). Unfortunately he died last year. Enjoy his nice works…

Celestino Piatti
Retro Designer and Illustrator

1922–2007

One of our most beloved designers and illustrators is Celestino Piatti from Switzerland. He is famous for his cover designs and corporate design of the german dtv book publisher between 1960 and 1995. Altogether he designed more than 6300 book covers. Puhhh! But he also did lot of other nice designs and illustrations, typographic works, paintings, sculpture and more than 500 artist poster. And last but not least he is the godfather of the owl. ;) Lars Müller Publisher just published a small nice book him and his work with dtv.

Scott Barry aka Bott Scary

Modern Hippie?

Scott Barry, a San Francisco based artist and illustrator fascinates us cause of his artistic ability to transport emotions and a “good” feeling with his art. He is using textures, pattern and colour shemes inspired by 70th retro designs and combines it with “modern” forms and a special kind of humour. He worked as creative director for three years at www.ordinarykids.com and is now working with another interesting studio www.mekanism.com.

We also found his footprints on Pender Island (Canada) the home of the artist residency Island Folds run by the artist Luke Ramsey and Angela Conley (she cares for health food etc.) www.islandsfold.com which invites upcoming (drawing) artists from all over the world and offers residencies with no charge or a small donation. Have a look at the photos on their site and you will wish to leave you town and country immadiately. You can support the residency by buying artworks from their online shop.

Seripop

Silkscreen Art

Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau work together under the Seripop name to design album covers, prints, books and illustrations. Seripop is based in Montreal, Canada. In their bright, colourful, anarchic artworks they use pattern, texture organic and rough shapes and handdrawn type to create a special very emotional atmosphere. The multilayered silkscreenprints are obviously influanced by 60th and 70th graphics, Polish poster art, street art and the alternative music scene in general. Crazy stuff! artofseripop.blogspot.com

Michael Perry

A New York based “Maker”

Michael (Mike) Perry is a versatile craftsman and a really maker (as he called himself).

Beside his work as designer, illustrator and artist he is the author of the fantastic books Over & Over: A Catalog of Hand-Drawn Patterns and Hand Job, A Catalog of Type.The must-haves for every ambitious designer. His work is modern and visually stunning, but also often relevant to classic/retro designs and illustration. He is a master of texture and pattern in a hand-drawn organic style. First we like to show some works he did for Urban Outfitters a chain of shops selling goods of pop culture. Below you see some free works. Enjoy!

Espen Friberg

A Norwegian illustrator, artist and designer

Today we like to feature the work of Espen Friberg, a Norwegian artist currently living in Baton Rouge, Lousiana. Espen has been working freelance since 2008. Before that he co-founded and worked at the Norwegian design studio Yokoland with Aslak Gurholt Rønsen. In 2006 the Gestalten Verlag published their well known Yokoland Monograph which is definitely worth to take a look at. He also did lots of designs for the Human Empire Label. Steven Harrington

Retro and native and modern

First time we be aware of Steven Harrington when he ordered something from our shop some years ago. After that we colaborated several times. He did a poster and a t-Shirt for the Human Empire Label. His work is a fusion of warm organic playful humorous retro and modern design. We really took this into our hearts.
